Becoming Bar or Bat Mitzvah at NLS
Let me begin by wishing you and your family Mazal Tov on your upcoming simchah!
At NLS we value the journey of each of our children as they prepare to become a 'child of the commandments'. We work closely with the family and the B'nei Mitzvah to prepare them to embrace their responsibilities for our Jewish traditions and the community. Throughout this journey, Rabbi Jeremy, Cantor Jason, DY (our Head of Youth) and our wider team will guide and support your child to ensure that their learning will be based upon their individual needs, and that they will be proud of becoming a Bar or Bat Mitzvah.
Like our Cheder, the B'nei Mitzvah Programme aims to:
Treat each child as a unique individual.
Enthuse your child with the love of Judaism through dynamic and varied approaches to learning.
Provide a safe space for the children where they can make friends and explore their Jewish identity.
Involve parents in their children’s Jewish development.
Our B'nei Mitzvah Programme usually begins when your child reaches School Year 7 (or the September of the academic year in which your child will be turning 12). Our first day of term is Sunday, 18th September 2016.
Children having a Bar or Bat Mitzvah at NLS are expected to fully participate in all key elements of the programme.
Our B’nei Mitzvah Programme
Preparations for a Bar or Bat Mitzvah usually take place over two years. This time is essential for children to develop the necessary relationships with their peers, teacher and Judaism and to develop the skills required to navigate life as a Jewish adult.
BM Year One
This is aimed at 'the emerging Jewish adult' and explores each child's personal, developing relationship with Judaism. A strand that runs through our programme is the taking of key Jewish topics and issues and exploring what relevance these have to the students and their B'nei Mitzvah. Our goal is to develop and nurture all of our children’s Jewish journeys, empowering them to create their own unique role within the Jewish community.
During these three terms we explore the following areas of Jewish life:
Term One: Jewish Morality: Ethics and Social Justice
Term Two: Shabbat and T'filah (Prayer)
Term Three: The Jewish Journey
BM Year Two
This is predominantly comprised of weekly one-to-one ceremony tuition, usually for 12 months prior to the Bar/Bat Mitzvah ceremony (relating to all prayer and Torah reading aspects on the day). Cantor Jason will be in touch with you, at least 18 months before your child’s BM date, to help you plan and prepare this aspect of the programme.
In addition to the above, children are also expected to participate in the following:
An initial family meeting with Cantor Jason as well as any subsequent family meetings
'Lunch & Learns', chavurah dinners, and other family learning sessions
Regular Shabbat and Sunday service attendance
The preparation and delivery of a D'var Torah (a short public talk by your child, usually about their Torah portion)
Other exciting youth and family events run throughout the year. Click here for a list of our Festival & Events Highlights 2016-17.
