Symposium 2 December 2007 marking the 50th anniversary of the publication of “We Have Reason to Believe” by Rabbi Louis Jacobs.

The evening began with a showing of the 1997 film of Rabbi Jacobs z”l speaking on:  We have reason to believe in Torah min Hashamayim followed by contributions from

Rabbi Jonathan Wittenberg - Is There a Further Decline in Interest in the Truth?

Rabbi Jeremy Gordon - Is There Still Reason to Believe? - and

Dr Miri Freud-Kandel - What Does Mainstream Orthodoxy in Britain Believe?

The evening was chaired by Peter Oppenheimer, President, Oxford Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies.

This event, organised by three founder members of New London Synagogue: Helen Tarsh, June Jacobs and Anna Horovitz, was originally planned to be a Lecture by Rabbi Jacobs in 2006 at New London to mark his donation of his library to the Oxford Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies, of which he was an Honorary Fellow.
Sadly that Lecture could not be given owing to Rabbi Jacobs’ final illness and the Symposium took its place, presented jointly by New London Synagogue and the Oxford Centre, with the full support of Rabbi Hammer and Adrian Marks (the then NLS Chairman), and also of the Jewish Chronicle, Valentine Mitchell and the Littman Library.

As reported on the Rabbi Louis Jacobs website:-  “This public meeting marked the 50th Anniversary of the publication of Louis Jacobs’s book We Have Reason to Believe. It was a resounding success with over 250 people present.”

There was a large and appreciative audience at New London for this unique event. They were clearly moved by the experience of seeing and hearing Rabbi Jacobs on film, speaking about the controversy which led to the foundation of the New London Synagogue and which is still relevant today.
