Our Cheder (Weekly Sunday Programme)

Registration is now open for the 2024/25 academic year!  To register a new or returning student please click here.

The New London Synagogue Cheder is a warm, friendly place, where around 80 children aged 4-13 meet each Sunday to learn, create, sing, pray and play.  We have a vibrant, creative curriculum delivered by a wonderful team of teachers and an inspirational fleet of Madrichim.

Each week the children engage in Tefillah all together, developing skills they can bring into the main Synagogue services.  Our regular Cheder Shabbat services allow the children to showcase what they have learned, and lead the community in prayer.

We teach Hebrew reading throughout the year groups, giving specialised attention to children at every stage of learning.  The learning is enhanced through Hebrew games, songs and basic conversation, honouring the fact that Hebrew is a living spoken language as well as the language of prayer and Torah.  Children who come through our Cheder have a confident grasp of Hebrew by the time preparation for their Bar/Bat Mitzvah begins.

Each term every class is assigned a different topic in Jewish Studies.  This curriculum has been designed to correspond with children’s development at different ages, and build upon their knowledge year on year.  The children engage in topics such as Shabbat, Israel, Prayer, Mitzvot, Jewish Values, Jewish History, and much more.

Of course this is taught alongside our fantastic celebrations and festival provision.  Some of our highlights include Pizza in the Hut for Sukkot, Chanukah Funnukah, Purimania carnival, mock Cheder Seder, Cheder sports day, and many more.  We also go on field trips to places such as farms and museums to supplement and enhance their learning.
