Join NLS & Yachad for a special evening of conversation with Joel Carmel, Breaking the Silence’s Advocacy Coordinator

24th February 2023 @ 6:30 pm - 19th March 2023 @ 8:00 pm

Sunday 19 March 2023, 6.30pm at Rabbi Jeremy’s home

Joel (then known as JoJo Weiner), son of Rabbi Chaim Weiner, spent his teenage years at New London.

Joel will share his experience making aliyah and servicing as a soldier in the IDF, alongside discussing topical events and the new Israeli Government’s envisaged enrichment of the occupation.

Joel Carmel spent teenage years at New London as son of our then Rabbi, Chaim Weiner. At 18 he made aliyah, spending a year studying at Yeshivat Ma’ale Gilboa before joining the IDF. He served in the Coordination of Government Activities in the Territories unit (COGAT) – based initially on the Gaza border and later in the West Bank. Today, Joel works as the Advocacy Coordinator for Breaking the Silence and lives in Jerusalem with his wife and two daughters.

Breaking the Silence is an organization of veteran soldiers who have served in the Israeli military since the start of the Second Intifada and have taken it upon themselves to expose the Israeli public to the reality of everyday life in the Occupied Territories. Breaking the Silence endeavours to stimulate public debate about the price paid for a reality in which young soldiers face a civilian population on a daily basis and are engaged in the control of that population’s everyday life. The organisation aims to bring an end to the occupation.

Yachad empowers British Jews to support a political resolution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Yachad believes that only through a political resolution will Israel thrive and prosper – alongside a viable and independent Palestinian state.
