NLS Salon Special for Yom Hashoah: Mothers’s Letters – The Holocaust Stories of Bertha, Mother of Irene, Mother of Julian Futter

7th April 2021 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Bertha Shonewald spent her married life in Koblenz where Irene was born. On the eve of War, Irene escaped to Denmark and subsequently Mandatory Palestine. As the Holocaust raged, Irene and Bertha would send letters to Irene’s older sister, Bertha’s older daughter in the, then neutral, United States. These remarkable letters have survived, together with Red Cross documentation and a host of archival material that tell a extraordinary story of love in a time of brutality.

Julian has had these letter translated and presented in a remarkable self-published volume, as a gift to his own children and grandchildren. On the eve of Yom HaShoah we will be joined by Julian and other members of the family to tell the story of their ancestors. We will also be joined by the senior archivist of the Wiener Holocaust Library, Howard Falksohn.

Join us in our zoom room for what promises to be a very moving evening.
